by Webmaster, 04.05.2011

Five Norwegian acts have been booked to play The Great Escape festival 2011. A small industry delegation will also participate.

Since being founded in 2006, The Great Escape has been firmly established internationally as the leading event for showcasing new music. Taking place in Brighton over 3 days in May, The Great Escape kick starts the festival season, introducing 15,000 music lovers including 5,000 industry professionals to the key artists and sounds of the year.

TGE offers a  variety of insightful industry talks, panel debates, targeted networking sessions and key note interviews that are run alongside performances from 350+ new local and international artists, themed parties, label parties, industry showcases, unique collaborations and outdoor gigs and club nights in over 34 different venues. The festival is attended by over 3000 delegates annually from across the globe. This makes The Great Escape a key date in the music calendar.

Norway at The Great Escape

This year The Great Escape have booked Norwegian artists Blood Command (picture), 22, Team Me, Lucy Swann and Moddi to play the prestigious festival. TGE enjoy a close relationship with Music Export Norway and their head booker has been regularly over to Norway for the international programs MEN produces with ByLarm and Øya.

MEN also supports Norwegian industry professionals going to Brighton to build a closer relationship with the UK and international industry. Music Export Norway thinks it’s important that the Norwegian industry professionals who discover, develop and manage the artists, attend international music conferences such as The Great Escape.

The Norwegian bands will all be playing two shows each at the festival. The artists have been able to secure high profile slots programmed by the likes of Drowned in Sound, HMV’s Next Big Thing festival, the Line of Best Fit to mentione a few. The acts represent a wide variety of genres, and thus reflects the diverse and exciting music scene in Norway.

Several of the artists have already started to gain momentum in the UK market after recent key shows and tours, with more to come in the near future.

International attention

Previous years the Norwegian showcases have resulted in international attention from important industry professionals. I Was a King signed a deal with International Talent Booking as a direct result of their TGE showcase in 2009, while The New Wine was selected as one of the highlights of TGE 2009 by the festival. Thomas Dybdahl was booked for the Latitude festival (30 000 attendance) after his TGE showcase, and the event has proven very important for Casiokids, who received several festival gigs and a lot of media attention after their appearance in 2009.

Last year, Ingrid Olava was among the artists representing Norway. Manager Anders Rykkja of Goldstar is very happy with the results.

- The Ingrid Olava showcase was a success for us. As a direct result of the gig we secured deals with several partners (agent, lawyer and PR). As a showcase and networking arena, The Great Escape has proven to be a very useful event, he says.

Praised by the media

Team Me manager Thomas Ryjord is excited about the TGE show, especially since the band has received lots of attention in the UK recently.

- The attention in the UK and Europe has been overwhelming, and it is great to see that so many people love the band. This winter has been like a fairy tale for Team Me. After just one year as a band, they perform at venues like Hammersmith Apollo in front of thousands of people and are praised by The Sunday Times and NME. Now we are looking forward to the debut album which is recorded as we speak.
