Norway at Womex

by Webmaster, 25.10.2011

Farmers Market and Ragnhild Furebotten will perform showcases at the Nordic Club at Womex 2011.

World music trade fair and showcase arena Womex is taking place in Copenhagen this week. As usual there will be a Nordic Club with showcases from a wide variety of Nordic artists. Norway is represented by Farmers Market and Ragnhild Furebotten.

About the acts:

Farmers Market

Imagine a hot Bulgarian band referencing (sometimes all in the space of one piece) a smorgasbord of global music styles such as bluegrass, bhangra, surf guitar, film soundtracks and heavy metal, playfully and expertly incorporating them into the distinctive melodies and asymmetric rhythms of traditional Bulgarian music to create a breathtaking, fast-moving, hilariously entertaining, description-defying, impressively virtuosic and totally unique experience.

Well, that’s Farmers Market, except that – apart from saxophonist Trifon Trifonov – the members all hail from Norway. Led by the multiple-instrument-wielding Stian Carstensen, the band has been ploughing its own furrow through the genres to the Balkans since starting out as a free jazz outfit in 1991 to become one of Norway’s most popular live acts.

Showcase: DR Koncerthuset Studio 4, Saturday 29. October - 00:30.

Ragnhild Furebotten

A new approach to folk music of the High North: Fiddler-songwriter Ragnhild Furebotten teams up with six outstanding horn players from the Norwegian jazz scene. Never on a Sunday is fiddler Ragnhild Furebotten´s second solo album following the critically-acclaimed debut Endelig Vals (Finally Waltz).

Her interpretations of traditional music from northern Norway – along with her own compositions – are combined with stellar horn arrangements by two of Norway’s most celebrated jazz composers, making this a truly new musical experience. The audience loves hearing it and the musicians love playing it – and it shows!

Showcase: DR Koncerthuset Studio 4, Friday 28. October - 00:30
