Showcase Scotland, Glasgow

- A key arena

Showcase Scotland is a key arena to meet players in the UK market, says Lene Furuli of SOLID musikk.

Showcase Scotland is an important international industry event which takes place during Celtic Connections, an annual prestigious festival held over 17 days in January in Glasgow.

Delegates are issued with a pass which gains them access to festival shows which feature either Scottish artists, or artists from our international partnering nation. Showcase Scotland offers a ‘Spotlight’ on one international partner each year, and in 2010 Norway was chosen as focus country. Six Norwegian artists performed showcases, including Valkyrien Allstars, Gjermund Larsen Trio and Skaidi.

This year was a follow-up to last year’s focus. Music Export Norway provided travel support to a small industry delegation, while Sigrid Moldestad performed at Celtic Connections, including a BBC 3 live broadcast from the festival.

According to Lene Furuli of SOLID Musikk, who represents Moldestad and several other artist within the Norwegian traditional music scene, Showcase Scotland is a key arena to meet players in the UK market, such as festivals and booking agents.

- Our strategy is to cooperate with agents in the UK and to get shows on the most important festivals for the artists we think will suit the British market. Sigrid played at Kings Place in London in November, live on BBC at Celtic Connections now, and she will be back in Edinburg with the band in April. We believe this builds an audience over time, says Furuli.
